The Coven were an illicit troupe of actress-witches in seventeenth-century London who were summarily executed in Gallows Gate Theatre, London, for supporting the Royalist cause through witchcraft and espionage, when women were barred from the stage. Their spirits were thought to haunt the theatre for centuries after, taking possession of actresses on Halloween in order to escape the confines of the theatre in mortal form.
