Maydan, the inmate, has the chance, by fortunate accident, to escape from his guard, an officer. His breaking free is prevented by the fact that he is chained to a handcar and therefore forced to follow the rails. He has no way of knowing who is friend and who is enemy, nor wheter the girl he meets will help him to evade the law.
