In his house in suburban England, CALVIN (30s) is dealing with the death of his wife, ELAINE (30s). He's so intent on repressing his emotional pain that when Elaine's distraught mother, ALICE (50s), arrives to collect Calvin for the funeral, Calvin spouts his newfound Buddhist beliefs to justify not having to go. However, once Calvin is alone again, BILL (17) arrives at the house. He's a student of Elaine's and is there to collect her beloved saxophone, which Calvin is giving away. Calvin's distress at letting go of his wife's most treasured possession is expressed as an act of violence. This incites a confession from Bill, revealing to Calvin that by repressing his pain he left Elaine feeling isolated and lonely. Alone again. A last attempt to not have to deal with the tricky emotions of grief backfires when Calvin is manically burying Elaine's saxophone in the backyard. It's here that he connects with the earth and with his pain - and at last he weeps.
