Owen and Kayley, a romantically-doomed couple, fear their relationship is stagnating and begin to blame one another. Meanwhile four omniscient 'Writers' present evidence that all romances are eventually doomed. Each episode centers around a flashback to a specific moment in Owen and Kayley's relationship: the first date, the first 'I love you,' meeting the friends, and a disastrous party are among the many topics covered. As the evidence for their incompatibility is unearthed the Writers, a breakup seems inevitable. However, Owen and Kayley surprise the Writers by breaking the script and dealing with the relationship on their own terms.
