American Family is based on a typical family with three children. Hunter and Sadie attend the local high school. Jax attends middle school. Dad is a witty detective who is known to pull pranks with his beat partner Gabriel. Mom is a stay at home mom but volunteers at the varsity cheer coach and helps with some details around the school. Ting Ting is one of the Asian exchange student that will spend her high school years in America. Tien You is also Asian but he left home to find a better life in American. He sees the Asian student loading the bus at the airport and decides to jump on hoping to find a home. Throughout the season we see Ting Ting and Tien You bonding with the American family who takes them in expectantly. The Asian students learn about belong to a family, the cultural differences, language barriers and the drama of being a teenager in America Ultimately, Ting Ting and Tien You are completely accepted into the family and become one of them. We will see Hunter falling for Ting Ting but knows that she is something like a 'sister' in the house. Addison will do just about anything to get Deans attention and tried to keep Dean from noticing Ting Ting. Tien You is found out to be a runaway and nearly gets deported. He and Stefan form a garage band. Tien You and Dad (Greg) form a strong bond. Sadie tried to figure out who she really is.
