Although Joni isn't emotionally available she needs the comfort and support of Olivia. In seeking this understanding she allows a situation of forced intimacy to evolve and despite there being much tenderness between them it is clear that their expectations of one another are not matched. As Olivia reaches out Joni pulls away. With some thought Olivia, coming from a place of experience, is able to recognize that where she desires love and commitment Joni is unable to fill that role. Joni is introspective and unaware of her surroundings, she is lost and her behavior reflects her uncertainty. By taking a step back Olivia is able to help Joni recognize that what she needs is comfort without the pressure of reciprocating. Sometimes understanding creeps up on you and once something is known it can never be unknown. Ultimately this moment brings a feeling of unexpected relief for both women.
