Set in Paris in the early 19th century, Arabella, a beautiful aristocratic young woman is taken into prison as punishment for crimes against the state. She is treated with contempt both by the jail warden and the other female convicts in her cell, who reject her because of her class and the segregation that controls the city that they live. Slowly, she begins to earn the other women's respect.
