In 1539, more than 12.000 indian slaves left the coasts of Brazil in search of the 'imperishable land', where death, disease and servitude would be abolished. This exodus was their greatest collective effort to resist the Portuguese occupation. The legend said the waters of that place could restore youth. Some believed they could bring their dead back to life. Today, the legend subsists in some of the poorest suburbs of Brazil, where people still believe in the existence of a passage to that land.
