A woman stirs the water, explores it, immerses herself in it, thus making pieces of driftwood and shells resurface in the lavoir (wash-pool) she then tries to tie together. Trying to give meaning to these offerings, she attempts to compose her mattang, a stick chart of the Polynesian ocean wave patterns and currents.
