Film 33
Welcome to my experimental direct animation film, 33. This film was originally about Buddhism, religion and the cycle of life. You can see some elements of this in some of the symbolism of circles, spirals and the way the objects transform from one thing to another, and the recurring images that appear. However, as I was making the film, I found I began to hate the process and before I knew it, I began writing really pretentious phrases in bad French and developing the film in a more hateful manner. The concept became 'A film without love'. Look for clues in the symbols, cues in the sound and the use of the very unusual voiceover. Film 33 is a film made by scratching directly onto film stock. In this case, I had some 16mm and 8mm stock from both the university and stuff I found myself. A majority was shot myself on 8mm. I also tried to push the boundaries of the form by intentionally damaging the film, letting it degrade, trying to grow mold on it, burning it and I even tried things you probably don't want to hear about (and it would get me into trouble). I also drew on it, painted it and tried layering it. All of the editing took place before the post-production pro cess, as I cut and spliced much of the film by hand. Then, during post production, i removed sounds and some parts of the film. I also lost a lot of footage due to it getting stuck through the projector, resulting in me having to force the film through the gate.
