Building on a recent five-year journey in my work with indigenous communities and the expansion of the series, Encoded Textiles, new iteration -The Exodus Series - engages with Mayan, Zapotec and Mixtec communities that lives in the USA. This project tells the story of the journey and the underlying reason for the massive influx of central American and Mexican immigrants (many of indigenous communities) to the USA. This film intends to participate in a larger conversation about the immigration issue which is currently very politically charged. In the process, this documentary highlights the value of the weaving tradition in the Mayan communities of San Martin Chiquito and allows us to enter their world where Mam, the Mayan Language of that region, is very much alive. I hope this will help to sensitize people about these communities and their journey.
